The election is long done, the work of preparing to govern has begun, but today history was official sealed with the swearing in of Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner as MPP of Guelph.

GUELPH POLITICAST #131 - Back With the Back-Grounder
News is the art of delivering the day's information in an organized and coherent way, but stories don't just happen with a beginning, middle and end all in one day. Some of the biggest stories, including the most important stories, trace their roots back many years. In the news, there's an important function to not just understand the day's events, but the events that led to the day's events.

Suzuki, May, and Cast of Thousands Rally to Support Schreiner
It was an afternoon of song and dance, spoken word, fiery political rhetoric, and hope that Guelph's future, in the short term, will be Green. The campaign for Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner held what was billed as the "largest political rally in Guelph history" Saturday at the Hanlon Convention Centre.

Leaders Debate? Schreiner Says He'll Be There With "Grassroots Demand"
Despite a grassroots effort, a Change.org petition, and the seal of approval from the Premier herself, a consortium of broadcasters announced yesterday that Green Party leader, and Guelph MPP candidate, Mike Schreiner will not be taking part in the main televised leadership debate on May 27. Schreiner, himself, is not impressed.

Schreiner Says Ontario Wants Craft Beer Not Big Beer (Politically Speaking)
What was essentially an event for members, seemed more like a campaign kick-off as Mike Schreiner successfully energized the faithful at the Green Party of Ontario's Policy and Training Convention Saturday. Banking on big breakthrough in this June's election, Schreiner noted in his speech that if people in Ontario are hoping for change with the big three parties, "It’s like asking big beer to make craft beer, it’s not going to happen."

The Green Party of Ontario is setting the stage for what it hopes will be an electoral breakthrough akin to provincial victories in British in P.E.I. and British Columbia this weekend with their party convention at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre here in Guelph.

Schreiner and May Smell Electoral Success in Open Guelph Race
"Guelph is a green town," declared Elizabeth May. The Green Party of Canada leader meant small 'g', not capital 'G' of course, but if it all goes according to plan, then this time next year, May and her Ontario counterpart, Mike Schreiner, will be able to boast that Guelph is both "green" and "Green".

Schreiner Proclaimed Green Party Candidate for Guelph for Spring Election
In an utterly unsurprising result, Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner was acclaimed by unanimous vote as the Green candidate for Guelph in next spring's provincial election. Schreiner becomes the first candidate of any party to be named in advanced of next year's campaign, and from the sounds of the Green Party gathering at Riverside Park Sunday, they intend to make a dent in the province's political culture when the votes are counted June 7.

Province Initiates [Some] Action on Water Bottling Companies
That splash you heard this morning was the Province of Ontario finally answering the call of thousands of community activists to finally doing something about companies taking millions of gallons of water per day for a pittance and shipping it out of town.

Green Party Enters the Niska Road Debate
Development and construction is always a contentious issue in Guelph, but the fate of the bridge on Niska Road and what it might be replaced with has proven to fairly controversial. Shall the bridge be updated to accommodate modern traffic patterns, or is the bridge, as it is now, what's best for the area? Into this debate, a new political voice has emerged.

Greens Say So Long, and Thanks for All the Votes
Obviously for local Greens there was some sense of disappointment with Monday's result in the Federal Election. Gord Miller was a good looking candidate in terms of resume, accomplishment and name recognition, and while he lead the Greens to a better showing than 2011 and pretty much finished even with the NDP, their hope was to send Miller to the House of Commons and sit next to Elizabeth May. But while, that wasn't meant to be, the campaign is expressing their gratitude to the Royal City.

Suzuki Endorses Gord Miller
To the degree that endorsements ever matter, I'm sure for a Green Party candidate getting David Suzuki's thumbs up is huge. The question though is: does Guelph care who Suzuki thinks should be Guelph's next MP? I can't answer that, but I can post Suzuki's endorsement video in the blog post below.

May Pledges Support for Students at U of G
Green Party leader Elizabeth May once again graced Guelph with her presence Wednesday in order to announce a major policy initiative to address the needs of Canada's students. On the porch of Raithby House, in front of a growing, curious crowd of students, May promised to eliminate tuition and reign in student debt in a bid to motivate typically apathetic young people across the country a reason to paint their ridings green.

Gord Miller Acclaimed as Green Party Nominee for Guelph
The final piece of the electoral puzzle, at least so far as the major party candidates are concerned, fell into place last night when former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario Gord Miller was acclaimed as the Green Party of Canada candidate for the Guelph riding in this fall's Federal Election. Miller was running unopposed, so his victory was a foregone conclusion, but the meeting was still an occasion because of the presence of not just one, but two Green Party leaders, Ontario leader Mike Schreiner and federal leader Elizabeth May.

Guelph Greens to Make Miller Official on Monday
Although he presently has no competition and it seems likely that his name is going to be on the ballot when Guelphites vote in this fall's Federal Election, former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario Gord Miller will make his nomination for the Green Party official in a meeting this coming Monday night.

Former Enviro Commish of Ontario Miller Making Big Political Move
A curious press release showed up this morning, an invitation to a press event where in Gord Miller, former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, will be announcing "his plan to run in the upcoming federal election in the riding of Guelph." Specifically? Well, if he's going to be a major party candidate, he has one of two choices, and considering his career path, it should be fairly obvious what colour banner he'll be waving come the fall.
