Guelph Greens to Make Miller Official on Monday

Although he presently has no competition and it seems likely that his name is going to be on the ballot when Guelphites vote in this fall's Federal Election, former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario Gord Miller will make his nomination for the Green Party official in a meeting this coming Monday night.

PRESS RELEASE - Clean Air Day Tomorrow, Ride the Bus for Free

Although I'm not sure how successful it is at actually getting people out of their cars and on to city buses, it's worth pointing out just the same that tomorrow is Clean Air Day. All day long, folks will be able to ride Guelph Transit for free across the Royal City, an act of faith that you'll be so impressed with the ease and comfort of your journey that you might be convinced to take it more often and pay for the privilege. The bus is always full on Clean Air Day, but I'm unsure just how much of that increased ridership has to do with the (lack of) price tag, and how much of it is people experimenting with the system. Still, do yourself a favour and do the air a favour, and for a day tomorrow, just leave the car at home.

Report - Work on Highway 7 to Start Later this Month

It's been on the books for, well, ever, and it was a promise made by the provincial Liberals in the 2011 election campaign (that's two campaigns ago for those keeping score at home), but now it looks like the expansion of Highway 7 between Guelph and Kitchener is set to begin sometime later this month.

It's been a long time since we've gotten a warning like this. But the incredibly dry conditions of the last month have caught up to us here in Guelph and the City has now moved out outside water use level to Yellow 1, meaning that greater restrictions over the use of water have now gone into effect. Lawn watering is now tied to a strict schedule, and you best leave the Slip 'n' Slide put away if it gets hot again. When it comes to water now, we don't have a drop to spare.

Kovach Confirmed as the Conservative Candidate for Guelph

In a non-upset, unsurprising move, the Guelph Electoral District Association (EDA) of the Conservative Party of Canada has announced that Gloria Kovach has been acclaimed as the party's candidate for the Guelph riding in the upcoming Federal Election. The Conservatives are the last major party in the Royal City to announced their candidate for the election, which is expected to be called this fall for October 19.

PRESS RELEASE - Tree Removal and Replacement on Carden St

In local plant news, it seems that some of the tress along Carden Street have been suffering from a bit too much water. Despite the persistent dryness during this past month of May, it seems that too much watering has caused the death of several trees along Carden Street. The cause of that is a matter being further examined by the city, in the meantime though, the trees will be removed and replaced starting sometime in the immediate future.

Guelph Transit is working very hard to get its act together. It's put together a pretty comprehensive remodel of the transit system and schedule that should go into effect later this year, but Transit wants more. Specifically, it wants more people to get on our city buses. What would it take for you to give up your car and take public transit more often? What are some ways that the city can get people to their destination quicker? What other areas can transit improve in? If you have an answer to any of these, or other transit related questions, the city wants to hear from you at a meeting next week.

Buses Moving Back to St. Georges Square for the Weekend

Remember when all the buses departed from St. George's Square? Well, your nostalgia itch will be scratched this weekend when circumstances (construction on Macdonell and Wellington) will force the buses to convene at the Square instead of Guelph Central Station. Plan your route accordingly.
