Olympics and athletics are of top of mind this summer as the Pan Am Games and Para Pan Am Games take place in Toronto in a couple of months. What does that have to do with Guelph? Well, the provincial Special Olympics will be taking place here next summer, and the annual fundraiser, Sounds of Summer, is looking to set up Royal City Olympians in style.
Read the press release to get all the details below: “Sounds of Summer” has become one of the premier outdoor music events, the Royal City has to offer. Not only do they bring in some of the best Live music, every penny goes directly to the region's Special Olympians.
On Saturday June 20th, Organizers expect a very busy day at their new host, Shakespeare Arms on Harvard Road. The venue has changed due to the demand and ongoing growth of the event. This years event showcases Madison Ing, Common Deer, Chris Bolister, Ty Baynton and Black Water Trio.
In 2014, Olympians, organizers and generous donors from all over raised $12,000 for Guelph-Wellingtons athletes. They are really pushing hard this year as in the spring of 2016, the Royal City will host the provincial spring games for athletes from all over Ontario. It will be a special few days to celebrate our local athletes and showcase our great city.
Event chair Shawn Stevenson couldn’t be more happy, “This event has grown from a 40 person get together to hundreds of people enjoying live music and giving to a great cause. We are thrilled to be partnering with the good people at Shakespeare’s and their staff and customers have welcomed us there.”
Shakespeare's General Manager Keith Buna is also thrilled. “It is special for our establishment, staff and regulars to have the opportunity to support our local Olympians and we want this to be a big success.” remarks Buna. “We want this to be the biggest and best year yet!.”
This years goal is to raise over $15,000 and that happens with the support of local businesses, silent auction and live auction donations and people turning out. Stevenson makes it very clear “Everyone is welcome to get involved and support our local athletes. They are great young people and every dollar raised buys equipment, lessons, travel and expenses for these deserving athletes.”
The cost to attend the event is $10 and is open to all ages. The organizing committee is still searching for donors and sponsors. Either can be made by contacting Shawn Stevenson directly at 226-979-7388 or via email at shawn41@rogers.com

On behalf of the organizers and Olympians, we look forward to seeing all supporters at Shakespeare's on Saturday June 20, 2015.
