Guthrie and Stewart Pleased With AMO Meetings

As the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference winds up for another year, delegates from most of Ontario's 444 municipalities are taking stock of their time with provincial government officials, and among them are members of the Guelph team. In the waning hours of this year's conference, Guelph Politico talked to Mayor Cam Guthrie and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Scott Stewart about what was accomplished, and what the first AMO with the Ford government was like.

Local Poverty Advocates Concerned About Ontario Gov's Move on Basic Income Pilot

Yesterday's announcement that the Progressive Conservative government was reforming social assistance, while ending the Basic Guaranteed Income pilot started by the previous government, caught those combating poverty by surprise. In a word, the Guelph & Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination is "dismayed."

Ford Decision on Regional Chairs Doesn't Let Waterloo Off the Hook


On Friday, Premier Doug Ford announced that the Ontario government was cancelling the elections for regional chair in York, Peel, Niagara, and Muskoka. But wait a minute, there are already regional chairs established in Halton, Durham, and one more... Where was that regional chair, again? Oh yeah, Waterloo!

Province of Ontario Makes Another Deal with Nestle, Not Water Related

The word Nestlé is the source of much controversy in our area, but one can't deny that there are a number of people in and around Guelph, and across the province, that owe their livelihood to Nestlé. And so we're reminded of this again today with the Government of Ontario's announcement that they are partnering with Nestlé to support new jobs, and to keep old ones, up the road in London, Ontario.

Guelph Going to (Legal) Pot Too Next Summer



In a surprise move, it seems that Guelph has been called off the waiting list and is getting its own legal cannabis store when legalization goes into effect next summer. Smoke 'em if you got 'em. Or rather, smoke 'em when you can get them in July.
