Flowers and Veggies Make the News in Guelph

Of course Guelph is renowned for being a fairly environmentally friendly place, so in that tradition today we mark how the City of Guelph won an award for planting some flowers, and is planning a celebration next month for all things vegetable.

First up, the flowers. Guelph took first place at the Ontario Parks Association’s Municipal Floral Display Competition in the best median and boulevard planting category for the “four corners yellow bed” garden at the corner of Macdonell and Wyndham Streets. The awards were handed out on August 18 at the Landscape Ontario and University of Guelph Trial Gardens open house in Milton.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the efforts, competitive spirit, and Guelph pride that our horticulture team brings to its work every day to make Guelph a beautiful place to live, work and play,” said Wayne Gould, supervisor of Infrastructure and Horticulture in a press release. Andrea Harris, Emma Burger, Thuy Le, Stephanie LaPointe and Jessica Ince were created as the team that produced the display.
Meanwhile, organizers are getting ready for Vegfest at the end of September. This year's third annual Vegfest takes place on Sunday September 25 from 11 am to 5 pm at the Guelph Youth Music Centre, Goldie Mill Park and at the Navy League Hall at 75 Cardigan Street. According to a press release, this year's event is expecting over 5,000 people to attend the event, and there are a variety of activities planned for them.
Amongst the highlights of this year's Vegfest are over 70 vendors and exhibitors, an educational area called ‘Get Vegucated’, a kids fun zone, a dog comfort area, music, cooking demonstrations, and a number of speakers including Sonia Faruqi, Fraser Bayley, Robert Grillo, Calvin Neufeld, Derek Walter and Steve Jenkins. Vegfest will also feature a number of waste reduction measures including a dish washing station, the presence of the Guelph Water Wagon and encouragement to those participating to bring their own reusable plates and cutlery.
For more information, you can visit the VegFest website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
