Despite the issuance of a "no board" report a little over a week ago, and the inference that there may have been issues in reaching a deal between the City and three key CUPE locals, it seems that a four-day weekend of negotiations has wiped away all concerns. Tonight, as city plows hit the roads to deal with an early spring winter storm, the people of Guelph are assured that there will be no lockout of, or strike by its office employees, outside workers and librarians.
The City and Canadian Union of Public Employee locals 241, 973 and 1946 have reached a tentative agreement. The union and the City have been locked in negotiations since February, with the previous contracts coming to an end in January. Since February, there have been 16 meetings in total with a four day marathon session this weekend from Thursday.
“We’re pleased to reach these agreements without any disruption to City programs and services,” said David Godwaldt, Guelph’s general manager of human resources in a press release. “We want to thank the unions for working together to negotiate affordable settlements that protect taxpayers’ interests and provide fair, equitable and competitive compensation to employees.”
The next steps will be for the three CUPE locals to ratify the agreement, and then city council and the library board will have to ratify it as well. No details about the agreement will be released, nor are they likely to be until the agreement is ratified. No dates have yet been set for that ratification.
