Perhaps because of an abundance of preparation, or perhaps because the weather was so-so, or perhaps because it was a Tuesday, the results from St. Patrick's Day in Guelph was pretty good according to the Guelph Police Service.
According to the police press release, there were 37 liquor offences handed out Tuesday, which is flat from last year's results. Numbers were down across the board otherwise with only four public intoxication arrests, and one each for impaired driving and public urination. In 2014, there were seven public intoxication arrests, four impaired driving charges, and eight public urination charges.
From the Guelph Police Daily News Release:
As has been the practice over the past several years the Guelph Police Service participated in a proactive approach to the annual day of celebration by working in partnership with several community partners including the City of Guelph, Guelph By-law, Guelph Transit, U of G Central Student Association, Downtown Guelph Business Association, the University of Guelph along with University Campus Police and University of Guelph Off Campus Housing, to name a few.
As part of this approach, social media was a great asset in messaging to all community members whether they were celebrating or not and reminding them to celebrate responsibly and to respect each other’s safety and wellbeing throughout the day.
Guelph Police through increased visible patrol and presence were able to act as a deterrent and reminder to those celebrating to do so in a safe, respectful and legal manner. That same presence allowed police to react in a timely manner to any calls for service or need for enforcement arising from the celebrations.
The weather of the day played a minor role as it was dry yet still somewhat cold.
All in all the day came and went without any significant calls for service. Guelph Police wish to thank all the involved community partners as well as those who celebrated in a responsible manner for their cooperation. As well, the Guelph Police would like to thank all community members for their patience throughout this day of celebration in our community.
