Although we know it's been coming for months (if not years), Premier Kathleen Wynne made the move today to finally drop the writ and let the election for the 42nd Ontario legislature begin.
Via a press release from the Office of the Premier:
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne today announced that the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, has accepted the Premier's advice to sign a Proclamation dissolving the 41st Parliament of the Province of Ontario, effective as of 2 p.m. today.
Pursuant to the provisions of the Election Act, the Lieutenant Governor also called for the issuance of writs for the general election to be issued Wednesday, May 9, and naming Thursday, June 7, as the date of Ontario's next general election.
The rest of the week is already filling up with campaign events starting on Wednesday evening with the campaign launch for the Mike Schreiner campaign, which will take place at Mike for Guelph headquarters at 163 Suffolk St W. The Schreiner campaign promises guest speakers, food and drink as they launch the "biggest campaign we've run in Green Party history." The festivities begin at 6:30.
On Thursday, why not meet a "third party" candidate from a new "third party"? Local Alliance Party of Ontario rep Thomas Mooney will be holding a meet and greet at 5 pm at the old Coffee Time at 247 Eramosa Rd.

Of course, the All Candidates meeting hosted by the Guelph Wellington Coalition for Social Justice takes place Thursday evening at 7 pm at the Italian Canadian Club at 135 Ferguson St. The evening is being co-sponsored by the Canadian Federation of University Women and CFRU 93.3FM, and all six local candidates announced so far are expected to attend.
And finally (for now), NDP candidate Aggie Mlynarz will host the opening of her campaign office at 120 Wyndham St N from 12 to 2:30 pm on Saturday. Following the office opening Mlynarz and some volunteers will kick off a canvassing blitz.
Meanwhile, the Open Sources Guelph team is in the process of booking all the local provincial candidates starting next week on the show. Stay tuned for all those details...
