30 years. If today's groundbreaking of the Wilson Street Parkade was a drinking game, the key phrase would be "30 years". In remarks before the groundbreaking, Mayor Cam Guthrie, Chief Administrative Office Derrick Thomson, and executive director of the Downtown Guelph Business Association Marty Williams wanted to make sure everybody knows that this is the first new parkade in the city's core in 30 years.

Downtown is Cool with the Change in Hillside Dates
As reported in the Guelph Tribune the other day, the Hillside Festival is conceding victory to WayHome after two years of struggle against the upstart music festival just a few hours further away than our own Guelph Lake. The 34th annual Hillside Festival will be held on the weekend of July 14-16, which is a couple of weeks earlier than normal, but does it also put Hillside into conflict with another of Guelph's summer festivals?

PRESS RELEASE - Macdonell St "Island" to be Tested for the "Enhanced" Downtown Experience
In a move that's sure to be a hit with everyone that thinks Downtown Guelph already caters too much to the hippie/dippy side of the War on Cars, the City of Guelph has decided to cordon off a portion of Macdonell St. at it's western end, right in the middle of the road, and make it a tourist trap. Say what? Yeah, like say have you ever wanted that perfect shot of the religious establishment formally known as the Church of Our Lady, right there front and centre? Well, for a summer test trial, the City is going to give shutterbugs of all stripes, local and foreign, the perfect vantage point. Right in the middle of a busy downtown intersection. If this isn't the biggest thing to hit downtown since pissoirs I'll eat my hat.

PRESS RELEASE - Transit Moved More People on New Year's Eve
Some good news from Guelph Transit for a change! It looks like 33 per cent more people took advantage of free, late night rides on Royal City's buses this New Year's over last, according to numbers released by the City of Guelph and the Downtown Guelph Business Association. With nearly 4,300 free rides given, more than 1,200 over the 2013/14 New Year's celebrations, this program seems an assured success and one likely to continue to run.
