On Friday, several residents and activists teamed-up to stop work for the day at the Lafarge site in the city's west end. After years of threatened development and negotiations, the land owners were taking the plunge and cutting down nearly 2,000 trees for a project to be named later, but it was was not to be on this day. Why? The neighbourhood wants the developer to be more neighbourly.

Niska Rd Bridge is Closing Indefinitely; City Cites "Safety Concerns"
Enjoy driving over the Niska Rd Bailey bridge while you can, because at the end of the month you'll be able to drive across it no more! In an announcement today, the City of Guelph's own engineers are saying that there are safety concerns about the bridge's abutments due to high spring water flows and heavy rainfall. As a result, the bridge will be closed on February 28 whether you walk, ride or drive.

Transit Changes to Routes and Schedules Have Begun
Keeping up with the changes to Guelph Transit can be tricky sometimes, but this is one of those occasions where we're dealing with a lot of information at once. The next few weeks are going to be hard on just about everyone taking the bus as routes and schedules are altered thanks to budget cuts, film shoots, road construction and the end of the school year.

Coucil Goes Late to Approve a 2-Lane Bridge on Niska Road
It was in some respect an issue more contentious than the budget itself, a packed house came out Thursday to see a staff report on the fate of the one-lane Bailey Bridge on Niska Rd., hear public delegations, and listen to council's debate and decision on the matter. Sometime after midnight, despite an overwhelming number of people in attendance representing the status quo, the fate of the bridge was sealed: Niska Rd.'s route over the Speed River will now be two-way.

PRESS RELEASE - Month-Long Wyndram Street Closure Begins Monday
A section of Wyndham Street between Carden and Fountain Streets will be closed off for a month starting Monday, and for once, the construction work involved has nothing to do with the railway bridge that's so often the subject of scorn involving tight-fitting transport trucks.

PRESS RELEASE - Guelph Getting Money to Study Enviro Impact of Coal Plant Site
There's a lot of lamentation in Guelph concerning parking downtown. So much so that no one really stops to wonder why some parking lots are placed where they are. Take, for example, the lot on Fountain Street across the rode from Guelph Police headquarters. Situated amongst many homes and businesses, it's a lone oasis of gravel and pavement that doesn't seem to service any particular business. True, it is now also home to Guelph's Greyhound bus terminal, but what if I told you that's because the property is too unsafe to have anything else, but a parking lot there?

Whatever They Were, the Site with the Drums is Clean Says City
The incredible case of mysterious drums buried near the intersection of Wellington St. and the Hanlon Expressway has been a local curiosity since the first drum was dug up last fall. But whatever they are, and wherever they came from, the City of Guelph is saying that the site is officially clean, even if they still aren't revealing - or are just unsure - what or why they were buried in the first place.

Report - Work on Highway 7 to Start Later this Month
It's been on the books for, well, ever, and it was a promise made by the provincial Liberals in the 2011 election campaign (that's two campaigns ago for those keeping score at home), but now it looks like the expansion of Highway 7 between Guelph and Kitchener is set to begin sometime later this month.
