Mayor Releases Statement About Fallen Police Officer

Sad news from the Guelph Police Service this morning about the passing of one of their own.Constable Jennifer Kovach. According to a Guelph Mercury article, Kovach, 26, was travelling north on Imperial Road South just north of the West End Community Centre at 12:30 this morning when her police car crossed into oncoming traffic and was hit by southbound Guelph Transit bus.
Kovach was indeed the daughter of  Guelph City Councillor Gloria Kovach, so this is a loss that hits the city doubly hard: the death of a police officer and the death of a member whose family has a lengthy career of community service. Very sad news indeed.
Below is an official statement from City Hall:
Joint Statement from Mayor Karen Farbridge and Chief Administrative Officer Ann Pappert
It is with tremendous sadness that we learned this morning of the death of Constable Jennifer Kovach of the Guelph Police Service, killed on duty on her way to assist at a call.
Our heartfelt condolences go to Councillor Gloria Kovach, Constable Kovach’s mother, and their family, who have lost a loved one this morning. There are no words that can adequately express our sorrow over their tragic loss.
We also recognize this is a very difficult time for our Guelph Police Service who have lost a member of their service. We would like to express our gratitude for their brave service, and assure them that Constable Kovach will always be remembered for her sacrifice to keep our community safe.
With sincere sorrow,
Karen Farbridge | Mayor
Ann Pappert | Chief Administrative Officer
I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say our thoughts and sympathies go out to the whole Kovach family.
