How Can You Help Out on Earth Day in Guelph?

This coming Saturday is Earth Day, so there is going to be a lot of activity around the Royal City to mark the occasion. Here's an overview of events in the Guelph area including clean-ups, tree planting, crafts and a film screening.

Earth Day Rotary Forest Tree Planting
Lakeside Church on Conservation Road
9 am to 2 pm

We are pleased to announce that the Rotary Club of Guelph will once again be partnering with the Grand River Conservation Authority and the Grand River Conservation Foundation on April 22nd for the Rotary Forest tree planting event. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to get together and make a significant difference. The Rotary Forest project’s goal is to increase the canopy cover in the City of Guelph and surrounding area by planting 60,000 trees by 2020. We are calling on environmentally-minded citizens to help transform a 40-hectare area, across from the Guelph Lake Nature Centre, into a wonderful new resource for our community, with trees that will clean our air and link nearby forest habitat to create a corridor for wildlife. This vision of a healthy community for generations to come is celebrating its 10th year. Wear your boots and learn how to plant a tree while having fun with your neighbours, family and friends. Shovels provided! We look forward to seeing you

7th Annual Spring Swap
Lakeside HOPE House

Lucky year #7 and we have a few new additions to the spring swap this year! How It Works: Bring ONE bag of your best pre-loved duds (clean and folded, women's and unisex) and swap it out for your 2017 wardrobe for just $10! There will be humble change rooms on-site and plenty of mirrors. We will also be facilitating a can drive for the Hope House kitchen and a pad/tampon drive for local shelters. If you've ever been interested in the services the Hope House provides, you'll be able to do a walk-about with one of their dedicated workers.

Grange Hill East Neighbourhood Group Cleanup

St. George's Park Neighborhood Group Cleanup
St. George's Park
8:30 am to 11 am

This is your opportunity to spend a few hours “spring cleaning” our beautiful park and neighbourhood by joining others to pick up litter. Last year, more than 900 people participated in Guelph and picked up 5,350 kilograms of litter. It is true that when we work together, we can make a big difference! The 2017 cleanup is open to everyone, and is a great family event. Participating high school students can earn credit towards their community involvement hours. Students must ask the crew leader to sign the required form. Participants will be provided with cleanup kits, including safety vests for teams picking up litter along busy roads. We will meet at St. George's Park at 8:30am. There will be a station set up at St. George's Park, so you can still come at anytime up until 11:00am. Bring gardening gloves, water and dress for the weather (rain or sun gear/sunscreen as needed). Following the cleanup and to celebrate, there will be a free barbecue lunch at Riverside Park.
