Transit Will Now Let You Know Where You're Getting Off

If you've been on the bus lately, you will have noticed a new feature in the form of a bright LED sign at the front of a bus. Right this minute, all most of them do is announce when someone pushes the stop button, but over the next month, they will start calling out the stop, and thus make it easier to get around if you've never taken a particular bus route before.

Starting Monday, the new LED signs will start calling out stops and displaying them in big bright letter at the front of the bus. “Guelph Transit riders can expect to see and hear bus stop names upon approach,” said Phil Meagher, general manager of Guelph Transit in a press release. “The automated next stop system will make the bus riding experience more accessible and convenient for riders and is in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.”
The new system is being tested on six regular Guelph Transit buses and two mobility buses, but it should be active on all city buses by the end of August.
As a transit nerd, I endorse this move with an enthusiastic thumbs up. It can be tough when you use a bus route for the first time to keep track of exactly where you want to get off, and with more route changes in the offing, it's a good idea on the part of Guelph Transit to make it easy for riders to navigate the Royal City via bus. It's a good move that will hopefully have all the bugs worked out in time for September.
