City Needs Your Feedback on Some Things

A city can't run on its own ideas, so from time to time, the policy makers and politicians reach out to us, the hoypoloi, to get our opinion on pertinent policy, decisions and plans. The City of Guelph currently has two important issues it wants your feedback on, and two highly contentious subjects at that: garbage and parking.

Press release #1 invites you to an open house in which staff will share potential waste reduction and diversion options that have come out of community consultation so far. It's the next phase of the Solic Waster Management Master Plan (SWMMP).
Guelph, Ontario, February 13, 2014—The City of Guelph is seeking feedback and insight from the community as part of its Solid Waste Management Master Plan (SWMMP) Review.
After extensive community consultation through an open house, focus group workshops, surveys, and on-going input from the Public Steering Committee, the review team has identified potential waste reduction and diversion options that will build on Guelph’s success and take current and future needs into consideration.
Residents are invited to learn more about these options and to share their feedback at the second SWMMP Review open house.

Solid Waste Management Master Plan Review
Community feedback will be used to inform the City’s new SWMMP—the guiding strategy for Guelph’s waste management over the next 20 years.
The SWMMP Review began last spring and has included evaluating the current waste system and programs, assessing Guelph’s future needs, identifying new waste management trends and the costs and effectiveness of new approaches, and exploring options to increase diversion.
Press release #2 is another invite, but to two consultation sessions regarding the current overnight on-street parking restrictions.
Guelph, ON, February 13, 2014 – The City is seeking public feedback as part of the overnight on-street parking review.

“City staff are reviewing Guelph’s current overnight on-street parking restrictions. As part of this review, staff will examine options that may potentially maintain, add to, change or eliminate the existing overnight on-street parking by-law,” explained Allister McILveen, manager of Traffic and Parking.

The review will include community engagement, consultation with City departments, and a review of overnight on-street parking restrictions in comparable municipalities.

Two public consultation sessions will be held during the review to provide an opportunity for community input and feedback. The first consultation session is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26 from 6-8 p.m. at City Hall.

Those unable to attend the consultation session are invited to provide comments by participating in an online survey. The survey will be open from February 13 to March 12, on guelph.ca/parking.

The current overnight on-street parking by-law restricts parking on city streets from 2-6 a.m. during the winter season from November 1 to April 30. However, a number of streets, generally located in older areas of the city are exempted from this restriction.

Staff plan to bring recommendations regarding overnight on-street parking to the Operations, Transit and Emergency Services Committee of Council in July 2014.
